Any ideas for severe arthritis in dogs?

My beagle is now 15, and was diagnosed with arthritis about 5 years ago due to obesity. She has lost all the weight necessary quite a while ago and was doing “fine” for years. She is on a steroid (the one that causes liver damage long term) and also a pain med. She stopped taking the medication for a 1-2 week period in July, and although she started up again, she has noticeably gotten worse. Her back end is low to the ground and her arms bow like a bull dog. She does not cry, but is clearly uncomfortable.

What options are there for treatment? We give her treats like Happy Hips and used to give her Sea Cucumber treats. Any information or ideas are very welcome and appreciated. Please honest and kind answers only.

This site is very helpful on what you can do to make your beagle feel a little bit more comfortable since there probably isn’t much you can do.

You can ask your vet if Adequan injections would be appropriate for your dog. Adequan is expensive, but does offer relief with little to no side effects, compared to Nsaid medications, and it can be very effective.

well my neighbor has a beagle and i know they can be very…energetic and climb things and jump around. Maybe you should just let her rest and make her feel comfortable. She is an old dog so maybe…i really HATE to say this but put her down. I know what it feels like to lose someone special but it might not cause her pain anymore. Im really sorry about your dog.

Ask your vet if she would be a candidate for acupressure. I have had great luck with that on my older Rott, he doesn’t take any pills.
