I’ve seen tv clips where people give their dog glucosamine pills that were made for humans. Is it really safe? How much should I give my 75 pound, 12 year old dog? The vet tells me not to, but I’m thinking he’s just trying to keep me coming back for the insanely expensive dog medicines.
I already give her a few coated aspirin a day, but it doesn’t seem to be enough.

Thanks
I’ve been getting asked about the aspirin I give my dog….The vet said I could give her enteric coated aspirin. When I said a few a day, I didn’t mean at once, I meant maybe 3 a day in 4-6 hour intervals.
Thanks for the answers!

Anywhere a dog has a joint they can have arthritis. The cartilage in the joint may be inflamed, but it can also be joint fluid causing the issues within the bones. The main types of arthritis in dogs are osteoarthritis, immune mediated, infective, and idiopathic.

Dog arthritis comes in various forms. Just as in humans, arthritis is an inflammation in the joints. A dog may develop arthritis anywhere that they have a joint. The cartilage in the joint may be inflamed or it may be synovial fluid which is at issue in some cases. The most common types of dog arthritis are osteoarthritis, infective, immune mediated and idiopathic arthritis.

The stiffness of the limbs will be more pronounced in the mornings or after long naps, but by working with the dog and encouraging exercise the stiff appearance will disappear through the day. There will also be pain in the joints felt when you touch their limbs or the area suffering. The last sign can be seen in a swelling of the limb around the joint. While it may not be noticeable when you feel the area, you should be able to notice a difference between joints.

An arthritic dog will usually experience pain when their legs are touched near the inflamed joint. The will usually be swelling in this area, but it may not be visible to an unaided eye.

There is arthritis medicine for dogs that will help treat the inflammation. However, many dog owners find that natural treatments for arthritis in dogs are more helpful. Glucosamine for dogs and MSM for dogs are two of the more natural methods for treatment as herbal remedies. Glucosamine is a naturally occurring ingredient that is found in most foods. It has anti inflammatory components that are best for osteoarthritis.

Glucosamine is an amino sugar which occurs naturally in the body – but part of the effects of aging is the loss of the ability to produce enough of this sugar for the body\’s needs. Glucosamine is not found in any significant food source, but can be obtained from the shells of shellfish. The anti-inflammatory effects it offers are very useful in the treatment of arthritis, in humans and in animals alike.

Many times, just a change in diet can be enough to treat the symptoms of arthritis in dogs. Especially in tandem with exercise, diet can relieve arthritis in many dogs. Just as in humans, obesity can lead to arthritis. If the animal is kept at a healthy weight, then much of the pain of arthritis will simply disappear.

However, arthritis remedies of various sorts may be needed along with a change of diet in order to manage the pain and other symptoms of dog arthritis.

She has severe arthritis, and is on medication for it, but it’s difficult to restrict her movements when there are younger dogs bounding around. She pulls up lame and cries. How can I get enough exercise for the younger dogs while making sure she doesn’t overexert herself?

I took her to the vet a 2 days ago because there was a drastic change in her behavior and I was concerned she was in pain or not feeling well. I was certain she was seriously ill and possibly on the verge of death. Her vet visit showed that there was actually a significant improvement in her general condition; however her x-rays showed a bulging disc and arthritis on her spine. The vet decided to give her a corticosteroid injection to see if it will make her feel better, and it totally worked–she was back to her old self in a few hours. She has a follow up on Monday, and I was just wondering what to expect. Has anybody dealt with canine spinal arthritis? What are common treatments? Did your dog respond well to treatment? Has anybody’s dog experienced lameness or paralysis from this type of condition?

The skeletal system, apart from providing the support for effective movement, functions in providing effective protection and coverage for the various organs in the body. Although the power house of all the actions performed by the dog’s body is the muscular system, the bones and joints are what the muscles move in the first place. The general health and well being of the skeletal system of a dog is very crucial. Just like in humans, there are a lot of diseases that can infiltrate the skeletal system and hamper its proper functioning. One of the most dreadful as well as the most widely observed diseases that affects the skeletal system of a dog is dog arthritis.

Dog arthritis hampers the overall functioning of the skeletal system by wearing of the bones and joints, leading to a persistent pain for your pet. Many symptoms and features are commonly observed in dogs that suggest the existence of the disease. These features include problems and inhibitions in getting up and rising to a standing position, being stiff legged after even hours of exercise as well as not wanting to come when they are called.

If your dog exhibits great reluctance in walking much or especially in traveling up and down a flight of stairs, it can easily be decided that the dog is suffering from arthritis. Unlike human beings, dogs do not have the ability to communicate effectively. As a result the dog faces trouble in expressing the pain and getting it through to the owners. As being an able owner of the dog it is important to always stay pro-active when it comes to sensing the disease. Being pro-active simply means being on the look out for potential symptoms of the arthritis. This would be a great favor for the dog as diagnosing arthritis early is very helpful in relieving your pet dog of the unbearable pain.

Arthritis is basically a disease of the bones and joints that is a result of inflammation. It is most commonly observed in older dogs. There are also much greater chances of your dog developing the disease if it is overweight or does not get a great deal of exercise. A dog has this disease in conditions where the physical activity of the dog is highly limited. There have been times; however, when even younger dogs have been seen suffering from this disease. The major cause for the disease in younger dogs is some kind of damage to bones that may arise due to injuries. In order to counter the disease and prevent your own dog from developing it you can ensure that the diet of the dog is proper and he gets his share of walks as well as other forms of physical activity. This is the best way to ensure that the bones and joints will not develop any stiffness and that your dog can remain active at all times.

She stopped taking the medication for a 1-2 week period in July, and although she started up again, she has noticeably gotten worse. Her back end is low to the ground and her arms bow like a bull dog. She does not cry, but is clearly uncomfortable.

What options are there for treatment? We give her treats like Happy Hips and used to give her Sea Cucumber treats. Any information or ideas are very welcome and appreciated. Please honest and kind answers only.

She has had great difficulty walking over the last 3 to 4 months.

What do you recommend??? Is Rimadyl good? A neighbor said it might have bad liver toxicity?

I tried liquid glucosamine/chondroitin for dogs, and this did absolutely nothing.

Vets or vet techs or pet owners with experience….please help!
