Before you go dumping plain old iodized salt into your dog’s water bowl, allow me to explain.
We are referring to something very different from the cheap, processed salt off the grocery store shelves. Like everything else on those shelves, the salt has been processed and demineralized and is devoid of any nutritional value.
Sea Salt! Unprocessed, natural and loaded with up to 80 minerals!! If you get a quality brand you will be amazed to see the flecks of color in the salt! WOW, salt has different colors when you don’t process it just for the sake of making it look pretty! You will probably have to check out your local health food store but it is worth the trip – for you and your dog.
It is no secret that our food supply is lacking in minerals sufficient to support our body’s needs. If you consider that our dogs spend a lifetime eating highly processed and commercialized dog food then it would be no great surprise to learn that they are mineral deficient as well. You can bet that the dog food manufacturers are not using quality sea salt in their mass produced dog food. Mass produced dog food that promises to be nutritionally complete is made with the cheapest, lowest quality ingredients available that in many cases the body cannot even utilize.
So, is it possible that supplying your dog with sea salt can provide benefits for arthritis?
The answer is this – minerals are absolutely essential for every process in the body. Enough said. If the body needs to repair itself in any way, it will require minerals, minerals, minerals.
If you would like to try it out here are the recommendations taken from Bob Butts’ WaterCure…
- If your dog is relatively healthy then try just sprinkling some salt over the food.
- If your dog is having a serious health problem then sprinkle salt on the food but also offer 3 bowls of water – one with 1/4 tsp, 1/2 tsp and 3/4 tsp per quart of water and let your dog choose the concentration. Use that concentration daily. Once your dog is well, the salt on the food should be enough.
- Be sure you choose an unprocessed sea salt with at least 50 minerals.
Test it for yourself. Pour a little heap of the sea salt in the palm of your hand and lick it off, follow with water. I know what you are thinking. That much salt is enough to make you pucker just thinking about it. Don’t worry, you will be pleasantly surprised at the smooth taste of unprocessed sea salt! Give it a try!

Seems salt seems to help cure so many diseases not only human ailments but also that of other animals too. Salt is just a blessing from Nature.

I wonder if wild canines use “salt licks” to help with pain and not just nutritional issues?

I didn’t new these facts about the sea salt for dogs. I started using it for me 1 year ago because I’ve read that it is healthier and good for diets. Till now I have always been thinking that dogs should not accept any spices or salt, but I will try your advice to my pet.
That’s crazy. I never knew that Salt could help dogs in this way! Does it work for cats too??

Great information on sea salt for dogs. Thanks a lot for this post. Arthritis have become common in pets so the difference between the usage of adulterated and pure sea salts is to be known for sure or else our pets life ll fell in danger. The Bob Butt’s Water Cure’s tips helped me a lot, thanks for that link as well. But still one has to take more interest in taking care of the health of pets to buy good quality sea salt at groceries.

A home remedy for arthritis in humans is to take Epsom salt, maybe this could be beneficial for relieving canine arthritis.
